Doberman puppies grow at a startling rate. A male may weigh around 7 to 9 kg at 10 weeks and 25 kg or more by 6 months, then fill out slowly until about 2 years. Leggy, gangly teenagers with oversized paws are normal around 5 to 9 months.
Keep growth steady rather than fast by feeding a food formulated for large-breed puppies and keeping your puppy lean. Avoid long forced runs, repeated jumping from vehicles and endless stairs until the growth plates close, usually somewhere between 14 and 18 months. A sudden limp, a reluctance to rise, or swelling around a joint during this period is a reason to book a vet visit rather than wait.
