Curlies grow steadily and reach adult height at around 12 to 15 months, but chest depth, muscle and coat density keep developing until two to three years. Puppy coats are softer and looser, and the tight adult curls often arrive between 10 and 18 months, sometimes after an awkward, patchy stage.
Protect the joints during growth: avoid long runs on hard ground, repetitive retrieves that end in skidding stops and jumping out of vehicles before about 18 months. Swimming is excellent low-impact exercise once the puppy is confident in water. If your puppy limps, hesitates to jump or tires unusually fast on walks, talk to your vet.
