The growth rate is astonishing. A Deerhound puppy goes from around 5 to 7 kg at 8 weeks to close to adult height by 12 months, then takes another year or more to broaden and gain muscle. In the middle stage it can look awkward, bony and uncoordinated, and crashing into furniture is common.
Aim for slow, steady growth on a large-breed puppy diet rather than a fast, heavy puppy. Free play on grass is ideal, while long forced walks, repetitive jumping and hard sprints on concrete are not. Let the puppy sleep as much as it wants, which is a lot. Any limping, swelling near a joint, or pain when you touch a leg bone should be checked by a vet promptly, since fast-growing giants can develop bone and joint problems.
