Dachshund puppy growth: milestones and weight estimates
How fast a Dachshund puppy grows, illustrative weight estimates and the limits of predicting adult size.
Standard puppies grow quickly for the first six months, are close to adult height by about 8 to 10 months and then fill out in chest and muscle until around 12 to 14 months. Miniatures finish a little sooner. A standard puppy weighing 3 to 3.5 kg at 12 weeks often ends up somewhere near 9 to 11 kg, though the size of the parents is the better guide.
Growth is the time to build habits that protect the back. Lift the puppy with one hand under the chest and the other under the hindquarters, never by the front legs alone. Block stairs, introduce a ramp or step for the sofa from day one so jumping never becomes normal, and skip long forced walks on pavement before about 12 months. A chubby Dachshund puppy is not a healthy one, so keep the waist visible.
