Training a Dogue de Bordeaux: what works and what to expect

Dogues are intelligent but independent and can be stubborn, so training takes patience and consistency. Start the day your puppy comes home, while it is still small enough to manage: loose-lead walking, sit, down, waiting at doors and calm greetings are non-negotiable. Short, reward-based sessions with food work best.

Socializing is critical for a guardian breed. Introduce many calm people, dogs and places between 8 and 16 weeks, and keep going through adolescence. Supervise meetings with unfamiliar dogs, especially adult males, and skip crowded off-lead parks if your dog shows tension. Harsh methods usually backfire, producing a more defensive and harder-to-handle adult.
