Training a Boerboel: what works and what to expect

Boerboels are intelligent and loyal, but they are not pushovers. They respond best to calm, consistent leadership, clear boundaries and rewards they value, often food and play with their owner. Harsh methods tend to backfire with a powerful guardian, damaging trust and increasing defensiveness.

Priorities are loose-lead walking, a solid recall, a calm settle and cooperative handling for vet and grooming care. Keep socializing weekly through adolescence, not only in the puppy window, and let your dog observe new people and dogs from a comfortable distance. Skip dog parks: a Boerboel may be fine with dogs it knows yet react strongly to a boisterous stranger. Bring in a trainer experienced with guardian breeds early rather than after a problem appears.
