Training a Newfoundland: what works and what to expect

How the Newfoundland learns, common training challenges and what motivates it.

Newfies are keen to please and sensitive to tone. Harsh corrections tend to make them shut down, whereas calm praise and food rewards bring steady progress. Train the size-related basics early: walking without pulling, settling on a mat, waiting at doors and not leaning on visitors. What is sweet at 15 kg becomes a real problem at 60 kg.

They mature slowly and can be clumsy, forgetful adolescents between about 8 and 18 months, so expect some backsliding. Stubbornness usually looks like lying flat on the pavement and refusing to move, and shifting 60 kg of dog that has decided to stay put is impossible, so build motivation with games and treats rather than force. Teach 'give' early too, since they love carrying things around in their mouths.
