Neos are intelligent but independent, and they were bred to make their own decisions about threats. They respond best to calm, consistent handling and reward-based training with food. Heavy-handed methods tend to create resistance, and there is no winning a physical contest with a 65 kg dog.

Start socialization early and keep it going throughout adolescence: visitors, children, vets, traffic and other dogs, all in a calm and controlled way. Teach lead manners while the puppy is still small, because a young adult that pulls is hard to hold. A solid sit, down, wait and recall, plus a relaxed attitude to being handled at the vet, make living with a giant much safer for everyone.
