English Setter grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the English Setter: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Brush two or three times a week with a pin brush and comb, concentrating on the ears, chest, belly and legs, where feathering tangles. Shedding is moderate all year. Trimming the hair under the ears, around the feet and down the neck keeps the outline neat and cuts down on the burrs and mud the coat collects on walks.
Bathe every four to six weeks or after especially muddy outings. The long, heavy ear flap limits airflow, so check the ears weekly and see a vet if you notice odor, redness or frequent head shaking. Trim nails every two to three weeks, and go through the feathering for grass seeds after walks through summer fields.
