Most German Pinschers stay sound into old age, though conditions reported in the breed include hip dysplasia, eye conditions such as hereditary cataracts, von Willebrand disease (an inherited bleeding disorder), hypothyroidism and some heart conditions. Responsible breeders screen hips, eyes and hearts, and test for von Willebrand disease before breeding.

Knowing your dog's von Willebrand status matters before any planned surgery, so ask your breeder for the result. Regular check-ups and a lean body support long-term health. See a vet if you notice unusual bleeding from the gums or after a small cut, lethargy with weight gain and coat changes, cloudy eyes or a limp that lasts more than a day or two.
