German Pinscher feeding guide: how much and how often

Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the German Pinscher.

Fuel an athlete accordingly, but watch the scale when activity drops. A 16 kg (35 lb) adult with a busy lifestyle often needs around 230 to 300 g of a typical dry food a day, roughly 2.5 to 3 cups, while a calmer or neutered adult may need noticeably less. The short coat shows condition clearly, which makes adjusting easy: aim for a visible waist and a faint outline of the last ribs.

Two meals a day suit most adults. Many are fast, efficient eaters, so a slow-feeder bowl or scatter feeding on a clean patch of grass turns a two-minute meal into a short search, which suits a breed built for hunting. Leave about an hour between a large meal and hard exercise, and feed puppies a diet formulated for medium-sized breeds.
