Hovawart health: what owners should know

The Hovawart is considered a robust breed, partly thanks to strict breeding rules in many countries. Conditions known in the breed include hip dysplasia, an underactive thyroid, degenerative myelopathy and some heart problems. Breeders typically screen hips and elbows, test thyroid function, and many also carry out a DNA test for myelopathy.

Maintaining a healthy weight, protecting growing joints and regular vet checks help. Contact a vet urgently if your dog has a swollen belly, retches without bringing anything up or paces restlessly after eating, and book an appointment for weight gain with lethargy, thinning coat or weakness in the hind legs.
