Hovawart puppies grow fast in the first six months, then more slowly. Most reach adult height at 12 to 15 months but keep filling out until about 2 to 3 years. Temperament matures slowly too, and a teenage Hovawart may test rules repeatedly between 8 and 24 months, often choosing that phase to start barking at visitors.
Avoid long runs, repetitive jumping and lots of stairs until growth plates close, at around 14 to 18 months. Free play on grass and short, varied walks are ideal. Any limping, stiffness after rest or reluctance to climb stairs in a young dog should be assessed by a vet.
