The biggest concern for Flatcoats is cancer. The breed has a well-documented high rate of certain cancers, including histiocytic sarcoma, which contributes to its lifespan of about 8 to 10 years. It is also prone to hip dysplasia, kneecap problems, glaucoma, and bloat because of its deep chest.
Responsible breeders screen hips and knees, test for glaucoma through eye examinations, and consider longevity in their lines. At home, keep your Flatcoat fit and lean, and check the body regularly for lumps or swellings. See a vet promptly about any new lump, limping that does not improve, unexplained weight loss, a painful or cloudy eye, or a swollen belly with retching.
