Airedale Terrier health: what owners should know
Conditions the Airedale Terrier is known to be prone to, breeder screening and everyday habits that help.
Airedales are generally hardy, but the breed is known to be predisposed to hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, some skin conditions and certain cancers. Like other deep-chested dogs they can also suffer bloat. Responsible breeders screen hips and often elbows, check thyroid function and are willing to talk about the health of related dogs.
Regular grooming lets you spot lumps, skin changes and hot spots early. Keep your dog lean and allow a rest after meals. See a vet if you notice weight gain with lethargy and a thinning coat, a lump that grows or changes, scratching that goes on for more than a week, or a swollen belly with unproductive retching, which is an emergency.
