Icelandic puppies grow quickly for the first six months and reach close to adult height by about 10 to 12 months. They keep broadening in the chest until around 14 to 18 months, and the full adult coat, especially in long-coated dogs, can take two years to come in.
Keep exercise on soft ground and avoid long repetitive runs until growth plates have closed, usually after the first year. Check the double dewclaws from puppyhood: they do not touch the ground, so they do not wear down and can curl into the skin. If a young dog limps, favors a hind foot, or yelps when a leg is handled, see the vet.
