Elkhound puppies grow fairly quickly, often reaching adult height by 10 to 12 months and filling out until about 16 to 18 months. An 8-week-old puppy often weighs 4 to 6 kg. Growth is usually even, and puppies should look athletic rather than chubby.
Keep your puppy lean and avoid long runs or repetitive jumping until growth is mostly complete. Short walks, free play on soft ground and early training are ideal. Hip dysplasia occurs in the breed, so if your puppy limps, bunny hops with both hind legs together, or seems stiff after rest, have your vet take a look.
