Irish Setters are slow developers. Most reach full height somewhere between 12 and 15 months, but they often look lanky and gangly until they fill out at around two years. The full adult coat, with long feathering on the ears and legs, may not arrive until 18 months to two years, and many dogs settle mentally only around their third birthday.
Keep puppies lean and avoid long runs, cycling alongside or repetitive jumping until growth plates close, usually around 12 to 14 months. Short, varied outings and free play on soft ground are ideal. Ask your vet to look at any limping, swelling around the joints, or a young dog that suddenly tires far faster than usual.
