Irish Setter feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Irish Setter.
A 30 kg adult getting plenty of exercise may need 1,400 to 1,700 kcal a day, about 350 to 430 g of a typical dry food (roughly 3.5 to 4.5 cups). Setters are naturally lean and racy, so a visible waist and ribs you can feel easily are the goal. Working or field dogs in cold weather may need noticeably more; a retired veteran on short walks needs less.
As a deep-chested breed, the Irish Setter is known to be at risk of bloat. Feed two or three smaller meals rather than one large one, discourage gulping with a slow feeder, and keep exercise away from meals by at least an hour. Long feathered ears dip into food and water, so a narrower, deeper bowl or a soft snood keeps them cleaner.
Counter surfing is a breed specialty. Keep food well out of reach, close bins and teach a reliable leave it cue from puppyhood.
