Leonberger health: what owners should know

Leonbergers have a relatively short lifespan, typically 7 to 9 years. The breed is predisposed to hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, bone cancer and other cancers, hypothyroidism, and inherited neurological diseases, including Leonberger polyneuropathy (LPN1 and LPN2) and leukoencephalomyelopathy (LEMP).
Responsible breeders hip and elbow score their dogs, use DNA tests for LPN1, LPN2 and LEMP, and add eye and thyroid checks. Keep your dog lean and keep up regular vet visits. Seek emergency care for a swollen belly or retching without vomiting, and book a prompt visit for noisy breathing, a change in the sound of the bark, weakness in the back legs, or new limping.
