Leonberger grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Leonberger: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
Leonbergers shed a lot, and twice a year they drop most of their undercoat within a few weeks. Brushing two or three times a week with a slicker brush and an undercoat rake keeps the coat healthy and the house manageable. During a heavy shed, daily grooming or a professional deshedding session makes a real difference.
Pay attention to the mane, the feathering on the legs and the long hair on the back of the thighs, where mats form. Bathing every couple of months is enough, and drying such a dense coat properly takes time; a high-velocity dryer helps. Check ears weekly, trim nails every two to three weeks, and wipe the lips after meals if your dog is a drooler.
