Training a Leonberger: what works and what to expect

Leonbergers are intelligent and cooperative, but they mature slowly and can be sensitive. Gentle, consistent training with food rewards and praise works best. Harsh methods tend to make them withdraw or dig in their heels, and a reluctant 60 kg dog is not easily moved.

Priorities include loose-lead walking, not jumping up, and a reliable recall, all taught while the puppy is still small enough to manage. Early socialization with people, dogs and new places helps them become the calm, confident adults the breed is known for. Because of their size, even friendly habits such as leaning or pawing can knock people over, so teach polite greetings early.
