Training a Portuguese Water Dog: what works and what to expect

Porties are quick learners with a clear sense of humor. They respond brilliantly to reward-based training and enjoy learning tricks, scent work and retrieve games. The risk is that they also learn how to get their own way: a dog that finds jumping up earns attention will do it forever, so be consistent from day one.

Common issues include mouthing, jumping on guests and counter surfing. Build calm behaviors such as sit to greet and stay on a mat, and use part of daily meals for training. Because they are so people-focused, practice short periods alone from puppyhood to avoid distress when you go out.
