Training a West Siberian Laika: what works and what to expect

Laikas are intelligent but independent problem solvers, bred to work far from the hunter without direction. They respond best to calm, confident handlers who use motivation rather than force. Short, purposeful sessions work better than repetition, and rewards should be meaningful, such as food, play or the chance to explore.

Recall is the main challenge, as a laika on a scent may not return. Use a long line in open areas and practice recall consistently. Early socialization with people, dogs and household pets is essential, though prey drive may never disappear entirely. Hunting training requires experience, and many owners work with local hunting clubs to learn the breed's traditional methods.
