Training a Keeshond: what works and what to expect

Keeshonden are clever and responsive, and they often suit first-time owners. They learn quickly with food and praise and wilt under harsh words, so keep sessions short, positive and varied. Many enjoy performing tricks, and the breed has a respectable record in obedience competition.

Barking is the main training project. Teach a 'thank you' or 'quiet' cue early: let your dog bark twice at the doorbell, then reward silence. Build up time alone gradually from the start, because Keeshonden worry when separated from their people, and that worry often comes out as howling or chewing.
