Training a Pumi: what works and what to expect

Pumik learn quickly and love working with their people, which makes them outstanding sport partners. The challenge is channeling their speed. Keep sessions short and dynamic, reward heavily with food or toys, and teach impulse control from day one: wait at doors, settle on a mat, and move only on a release word.

Barking is the most common complaint. Teach a 'speak' and 'quiet' pair, reward calm observation at windows, and avoid answering noisy demands with attention. Early, varied socialization with people, children, bikes and other dogs helps prevent excessive suspicion and leash reactivity.
