Schipperke health: what owners should know
Conditions the Schipperke is known to be prone to, breeder screening and everyday habits that help.
Schipperkes are generally long-lived, but the breed is predisposed to MPS IIIB (an inherited metabolic disease with a DNA test), Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, patellar luxation, hypothyroidism and epilepsy. Responsible breeders DNA test for MPS IIIB, have knees and hips checked, and ask about thyroid and seizure history in their lines.
Regular weigh-ins and dental care do most of the protective work at home. See your vet for a hind-leg limp or skipping gait, a gradual loss of balance or coordination in a young adult, weight gain with thinning hair and low energy, or any seizure. Persistent bad breath or red gums also deserve a dental check.
