Schipperke feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Schipperke.
A 6 kg (13 lb) Schipperke typically eats about 80 to 110 g of a typical dry food a day, roughly 3/4 to 1 cup, split into two meals. They are food-motivated and very good at persuading you they have not been fed, so measure portions and count training treats as part of the daily allowance.
Weight creeps on easily after neutering and in middle age, and the thick coat hides a widening middle. Run your hands along the ribs once a week; you should feel them without pressing. An overweight Schipperke loses the quick, agile movement that defines the breed, and the extra load strains hips and knees.
The pointed, fox-like muzzle makes a shallow, wide bowl easiest to use. Some Schipperkes carry mouthfuls of food to another spot to eat, which is a harmless quirk as long as the whole meal gets eaten.
