A practical grooming routine for the Spinone Italiano: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
The wiry coat is fairly low maintenance. Brush once a week with a pin brush or a wide-toothed comb, and hand-strip lightly a few times a year to remove dead hair and keep the outline tidy. Clipping is best avoided, because it softens the coat and reduces its protection against thorns and wet weather.
Wipe the beard daily with a damp cloth, since food and saliva gather there and start to smell. Check and clean the long, hanging ears weekly and dry them after swimming. Trim nails every three to four weeks, and look between the toes for grass seeds after walks through long grass. A bath every couple of months, or when needed, is enough.
