West Siberian Laika health: what owners should know

The West Siberian Laika is a primitive working breed and generally very healthy. Hip dysplasia has been reported, and responsible breeders screen hips where schemes are available. Most health issues in working dogs come from injuries, such as cuts from branches, bites from game, or strains after long hunts, and from parasites like ticks picked up in forests.

Regular tick checks, parasite prevention advised by your vet, and inspecting paws after outings go a long way. Keep weight in check during quieter months. See a vet if your dog is lame for more than a day, has wounds from wildlife, shows lethargy or fever after tick exposure, or has sudden changes in appetite or behavior.
