West Siberian Laika feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the West Siberian Laika.
An adult of about 20 kg (44 lb) usually needs 250 to 320 g of a typical dry food a day, about 2.5 to 3.5 cups, but working dogs in cold weather may need up to half again as much. Laikas are traditionally efficient eaters, and pet dogs can gain weight quickly if fed a working dog's ration during a quiet summer. Feel the ribs under the thick coat to check condition.
Split food into two meals and avoid feeding a large meal just before a long day of hunting or running. For dogs kept outdoors in winter, check water bowls often, as they can freeze in hours; a heavy bowl or a heated one prevents spills and ice. Some laikas guard their food around other dogs, so feed in separate spaces if needed.
