Basenji health: what owners should know

One condition dominates Basenji health discussions: Fanconi syndrome, a kidney disorder that affects how nutrients are reabsorbed. The breed is also known to be prone to progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism and a chronic intestinal condition called immunoproliferative small intestinal disease. DNA tests are available for Fanconi syndrome and for a form of PRA, and responsible breeders use them before mating.

Rising thirst, extra trips outside to urinate, weight loss, ongoing diarrhea or unusual tiredness all warrant a vet visit. Also book a check for bumping into things in dim light, a dull, thinning coat or weight gain without a change in diet.
