Wire Fox Terrier health: what owners should know

The breed is generally hardy and long-lived. Known inherited conditions include primary lens luxation, where the lens of the eye slips out of position, and a DNA test exists so breeders can avoid producing affected puppies. Some lines are prone to skin allergies, and deafness, slipping kneecaps and certain heart conditions are occasionally reported. Ask breeders about eye testing and the health of the parents and grandparents.

Keep your terrier lean and active, and check its eyes, skin and paws weekly. See a vet the same day if an eye suddenly looks red, cloudy or painful, or if one pupil looks different from the other, since lens problems can be an emergency. Persistent itching, hair loss, limping or skipping a step with a back leg are also worth booking in.
