How much exercise does a Wire Fox Terrier need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Wire Fox Terrier enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
Aim for at least 60 minutes of genuine activity a day, and ideally more, mixing walks with games that use the brain. A flirt pole (a lure tied to a rope on a stick) lets the chase instinct out under your control. Agility, earthdog trials, scentwork and barn hunt, where dogs search straw bales for rats kept safely in aerated tubes, are all popular with the breed.
Recall is the weak link. Off-lead running works only in securely fenced areas or on a long line, because a Wire Fox Terrier on a scent can tune you out completely. A well-exercised terrier is relaxed and quiet at home; an under-exercised one barks, digs, chews and escapes. Garden fences should be solid, at least 1.5 m (5 ft) high and reinforced at the base.
