Wire Fox Terrier grooming: brushing, bathing and shedding
A practical grooming routine for the Wire Fox Terrier: coat care, baths, nails and ears.
The correct wire coat is kept by hand-stripping: pulling out dead outer hairs so fresh, harsh coat grows in. A full strip every four to six months, or rolling the coat by stripping a little every couple of weeks, keeps the dog sharp, cuts shedding and keeps the color rich. Many pet owners choose clipping because it is quicker and cheaper. That is fine for comfort, but the coat becomes softer, paler and more likely to hold dirt.
Between strips, brush and comb once or twice a week, paying attention to the beard and leg furnishings where food and burrs gather. Wipe the beard after meals. Bathe only when needed. Trim nails every three to four weeks, more often for dogs that dig mainly on soft ground, and check the small folded ears weekly for dirt or redness.
