Training an American Foxhound: what works and what to expect

How the American Foxhound learns, common training challenges and what motivates it.

American Foxhounds are intelligent but independent, bred to work in a pack with little direction from people. They respond to patient training with food rewards and cheerful praise, in short sessions. Expect progress to be steady rather than fast.

Recall is the biggest challenge, because a fresh scent will override almost any command. Use a long line, a harness and secure fences, and treat off-lead freedom as a privilege for enclosed spaces. A whistle or a distinctive recall word, paired with a very high-value treat, gives you the best chance of being heard over a fresh trail. Hounds raised in kennels may need house training from scratch as adults, so start with a routine and a crate.
