How much exercise does an American Foxhound need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities an American Foxhound enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
American Foxhounds need 90 minutes to 2 hours of exercise a day, and they have the stamina to run far longer. They enjoy running alongside a bike, hiking, trail work and anything that lets them use their nose. A securely fenced field for free running is ideal, since few hounds can be trusted off lead in open country.
A hound that has not run enough will tell you by howling, pacing, digging under fences and chewing whatever is nearest. Foxhounds handle warm weather better than many breeds but still need shade, water and cooler hours for long sessions in summer. If your dog shows extreme fatigue, stumbling or heavy panting that does not settle, contact a vet.
