Berners are willing, gentle learners, and at the same time they can be sensitive and a little stubborn. Keep sessions short and cheerful, because a Berner that decides a task is dull will simply sit down and watch you.

Start lead manners early: a 45 kg dog that pulls is a genuine problem, especially on icy pavements. Teach waiting at doors, greeting without jumping and a reliable recall while your puppy is small and eager. Mental maturity comes late, so expect puppyish behavior until around 2 years and stay consistent through the adolescent months.
