American Foxhound feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the American Foxhound.
A lean, active adult of 30 kg (66 lb) may need 350 to 450 g of dry food a day, about 3.5 to 4.5 cups, split into two meals. Hounds hunting through the season may need considerably more, while pet hounds with moderate exercise need less.
Foxhounds are notorious food thieves, with a nose that finds anything left out. Store food in sealed bins, keep counters clear and never leave a plate unattended at nose height. Keep your hound lean: ribs should be easy to feel and a waist visible, as a working dog's body should be.
Many pack-raised hounds eat fast, a habit learned competing with kennel mates. A heavy bowl that cannot be tipped, or a slow feeder, helps with gulping, and feeding a second dog in a separate room avoids squabbles at mealtime.
