Training a German Shepherd: what works and what to expect

Shepherds learn remarkably quickly, which cuts both ways: they pick up a bad habit in two or three repetitions just as easily as a good one. They respond best to clear, consistent handling with food and toy rewards, and many working-line dogs value a tug toy above any treat. Several short sessions of 5 to 15 minutes spread across the day beat one long lesson.

The biggest challenge is rarely obedience. It is social confidence. Between 8 and 16 weeks, introduce your puppy calmly to many people, surfaces, vehicles and sounds, and keep going through adolescence, when some Shepherds become suspicious or reactive. Teach a solid settle on a mat early, because a dog that cannot switch off will shadow you everywhere and struggle when you leave the house.
