Training a Beagle: what works and what to expect

Beagles learn quickly when food is involved and slowly when it is not. Sessions of five to ten minutes, small tasty rewards and lots of repetition get results, while harsh corrections make them switch off entirely. They respond best to games where the right answer pays instantly, and many take happily to nosework, rally or scent detection classes.

Recall is the lifelong project. Choose a whistle or a word used only for recall, practice it daily in the house and garden, and pay generously every time. Even a well-trained Beagle may fail when a fresh rabbit trail crosses its path, so treat recall as a safety bonus rather than a guarantee. Crate training helps with house training and the chewing phase, and practicing short absences from the first weeks reduces the howling that can start when the dog is left.
