Training a Standard Schnauzer: what works and what to expect

Standards learn quickly but have a stubborn streak and get bored with repetition. Short, varied sessions using food and play work best. They spot inconsistency instantly: if the sofa is allowed on Tuesday, it will be expected on Wednesday.
Their guarding instinct needs shaping. Teach an alert-then-quiet routine and socialize widely so that visitors become ordinary. Some can be bossy with other dogs, especially of the same sex, so practice polite greetings and calm introductions. Once they see the point of a task, they excel at obedience, agility and tracking.
