Training a Swedish Vallhund: what works and what to expect

Vallhunds are quick, keen learners who enjoy working with their people, and reward-based training with food and toys suits them well. Their challenge is not brains but enthusiasm: they can be pushy and noisy when excited, so teaching calm behaviors, such as settling on a mat, matters as much as sit and down.

Nipping is the classic problem. Redirect puppy nips onto a toy, reward calm greetings, and teach children not to run shrieking around a young Vallhund. Build a reliable recall from the first week, since the breed will chase anything that moves. Barking can be managed with a quiet cue and plenty of mental work.
