Training a Bull Terrier: what works and what to expect

How the Bull Terrier learns, common training challenges and what motivates it.

Bull Terriers learn fast but do not always see the point of doing what you asked. Short, playful sessions using food and toys work much better than repetition or confrontation. Owners who turn training into a game, for example using a brief tug session as the reward for a solid down, often get impressive results from a breed with a stubborn reputation.

The main challenges are pulling on the lead, jumping up, adolescent mouthing and reactions to other dogs. Start loose-lead walking and impulse control exercises such as waiting at doors and leave it early, and keep them going through adolescence. Because some people are wary of the breed, a calm, well-mannered Bull Terrier is also its own best advertisement.
