Belgian Malinois feeding guide: how much and how often
Daily calories, portions by age and practical feeding tips for the Belgian Malinois.
Energy needs vary widely. A 30 kg pet getting two hours of activity might need 1,400 to 1,800 kcal a day, which is about 350 to 450 g of a typical dry food (roughly 3.5 to 4.5 cups). A dog doing full-time detection or protection work may need more, and a quieter female less. Adjust by body shape: you should see a clear waist and feel ribs easily under a thin layer of fat.
Many Malinois bolt food. A slow feeder, a snuffle mat or simply using a large share of the daily ration as training rewards turns mealtime into work and slows the pace. Using food this way also builds focus: a dog that earns breakfast through ten minutes of heelwork is getting fed and trained at once.
Like other deep-chested breeds, the Malinois can be at risk of bloat. Feed two meals rather than one large one, and give an hour of calm before and after hard exercise or bite work.
