How much exercise does a Belgian Malinois need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Belgian Malinois enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
Aim for 90 to 120 minutes of combined physical and mental work daily. The best mix pairs running or fetch with something that engages the brain, such as tracking, scent games, obedience or retrieving to hand. Popular sports include IGP (tracking, obedience and protection), French ring, mondioring, agility, dock diving and nosework. Two forty-minute sessions of structured activity usually beat one long aimless walk.
Signs of too little: circling, tail chasing, fixating on shadows or lights, barking at the fence and chewing through doors. Signs of too much or the wrong kind: a dog that cannot settle, grows more reactive or loses focus. Teaching an off switch, such as a settle on a mat for 20 minutes, matters as much as the exercise itself.
