Puppies grow fast and look adult by about a year, but full muscle and chest depth usually arrive around 18 months, and mental maturity often takes until two or even three. Growth plates in the legs typically close somewhere between 12 and 14 months, so repeated high jumps, hard stops on slippery floors and long runs on pavement are best postponed until then.
The early months are famously intense. Malinois puppies mouth everything, including hands, sleeves and trouser legs, and they need a planned outlet: tug toys, chew items and short training games from eight weeks. Watch for limping, reluctance to jump into the car or a puppy that tires much faster than expected, and have these checked rather than put down to growing pains.
