Training a Belgian Malinois: what works and what to expect

Malinois learn at remarkable speed, and they learn mistakes just as fast. Reward-based methods using food, tug or a ball work extremely well, while harsh corrections often create conflict and defensiveness in such a sensitive, intense dog. Short, clear sessions several times a day suit them better than one marathon.
The biggest challenges are impulse control and arousal. Build calm behaviors early: waiting at doors, releasing a toy on cue, lying still while you move around. Socialize thoroughly between 8 and 16 weeks with calm strangers, other dogs, traffic and different floors, then keep going through adolescence. If you want protection work, find an experienced club rather than teaching it at home.
