How much exercise does a Bernese Mountain Dog need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Bernese Mountain Dog enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
An adult Berner is usually content with about 60 minutes of exercise a day, ideally split into two walks with some play. The breed is built for strength rather than speed, so steady hikes, sniff-heavy woodland wanders or, once fully grown and cleared by a vet, pulling a small cart suit it better than repeated sprints after a ball.
Heat is the real limit. That black coat soaks up sunshine, and the breed was shaped by Alpine weather, so on days above about 22°C (72°F) walk at dawn and dusk and carry water. A Berner that lies down mid-walk, pants hard with a wide, flat tongue, or refuses to go on has had enough. In snow the same dog comes alive and will happily walk much longer.
