How much exercise does a Flat-Coated Retriever need?
Daily exercise minutes, the activities a Flat-Coated Retriever enjoys and signs of too much or too little.
Plan on at least 90 minutes of activity a day for an adult, with a good chunk of off-lead running where it is safe. Flatcoats thrive on retrieving games, swimming, gundog training, scent work, agility and long hikes. Mental work, such as hunting for hidden dummies, tires them as well as running does.
An under-exercised Flatcoat often becomes a nuisance: jumping, chewing and inventing games with your shoes. Many love water and mud, so plan for a messy dog. On very hot days, cut walks short and seek shade, and let an older dog set a slower pace. A dog that suddenly slows or becomes reluctant to play may be unwell and should see a vet.
